The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
