An Prediction Market User Profited $436,000 on Wagers on Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
Several of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
